Washington, D.C. – Following Representative George Miller (D-Calif.) and Representative Rosa DeLauro’s (D-Conn.) introduction of the Schedules That Work Act (H.R. 5159), Jobs With Justice Executive Director Sarita Gupta issued the following statement:

“Representative Miller and DeLauro’s bill is a critical step toward creating quality, sustainable jobs in industries that desperately need it. Retail employees in particular need family-friendly schedules – many of them aren’t just living paycheck to paycheck, they’re living hour to hour, because they’re at the whim of erratic scheduling practices that make it impossible to set a budget, let alone schedule medical appointments or arrange for care for their loved ones.

Businesses succeed when employees have stable hours. Erratic, constantly changing schedules aren’t just a nightmare for workers, they’re bad for business. It’s time we adopt 21st-century policies that keep up with the changing nature of today’s workplace.”
