“You are never strong enough that you don’t need help,” said civil rights activist Cesar Chavez. The former Mexican American farm worker and co-founder of the United Farm Workers used his resources to aid the hundreds of repressed migrant farm workers in America from the 1960s to the 1990s. The Cultural Center celebrates his birthday and legacy with a week-long series of free events. FRIDAY -- Chicano Read In, Brava Stage, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. |

FRESH celebrates the farmers, thinkers and business people across America who are re-inventing our food system. Each has witnessed the rapid transformation of our agriculture into an industrial model, and confronted the consequences: food contamination, environmental pollution, depletion of natural resources, and morbid obesity. Forging healthier, sustainable alternatives, they offer a practical vision for a future of our food and our planet. Among several main characters, FRESH features urban farmer and activist, Will Allen, the recipient of MacArthurs 2008 Genius Award; sustainable farmer and entrepreneur, Joel Salatin, made famous by Michael Pollans book, The Omnivores Dilemma; and supermarket owner, David Ball, challenging our Wal-Mart dominated economy. The event is part of our on-going commitment to food education, its free and open the public this film focus on the importance of eating healthier, locally grown food. Those in attendance will learn about the importance of local food and how they can incorporate this into their daily lives and participate locally in their communities – from backyard gardening, family farms to farmers markets. It will be a lively and fun evening for all |

Morristown: A film about the working class response to globalization, from Tennessee to Mexico. Filmed in the mountains of east Tennessee, interior Mexico, and Ciudad Juarez, Morristown is a one-hour documentary about the impact of corporate globalization, free trade and immigration policy on working people’s lives. In factories, fields, union halls, Mexican stores, city parks and employment agencies, working families speak intimately about their lives, work, disappointments and dreams. The documentary travels to the U.S.-Mexico border to create a deeper understanding of factory flight out of Morristown, Tennessee, and to interior Mexico to look at the forces that cause immigration. It also documents poultry workers’ courageous efforts to organize to address their problems, and ends with a stunning union victory at a large processing plant in Morristown. This event is open and free to all. |

For over 20 years, a coalition of religious groups from all over North Carolina have marched together during Holy Week in the Pilgrimage for Peace and Justice. Core walkers along with over 30 sponsoring organizations in 5 different cities walk together to support and promote various social justice issues, including farmworker rights. This year the Pilgrimage will focus on promoting justice for farmworkers, fair trade policies, and immigrant rights. On March 31, Pilgrimage participants and FLOC supporters will march together from Tobaccoville, NC, where Reynolds American's tobacco processing plant is located, to Reynolds headquarters in downtown Winston Salem, in support of FLOC's Reynolds Campaign. We are calling on Reynolds American, one of the largest tobacco corporations in the US, to meet with FLOC to discuss the deplorable conditions the exist in tobacco fields in the South. The 15 mile walk is symbolic of the many marches that farmworkers and supporters have walked in the past, and the difficult and dangerous work that farmworkers still face every day. Along the route we will celebrate past victories and leaders and Cesar Chavez's birthday. Please march with us in support of justice for farmworkers! If you cannot walk the entire route, feel free to meet us at one of the rest points. For more details on the route, please visit http://supportfloc.org/Pilgrimage2010.aspx. |

The Recuerda a Cesar Chavez Committee (RCCC) is marking Cesar Chavez Day with a series of community events in Albuquerque March 26 – 27, 2010. The all-volunteer RCCC is planning these events to mark the anniversary of the birth of a unique and humble leader who influenced and inspired millions of Americans to seek social justice and civil rights for the poor and disenfranchised in our society. A true American hero, César was a civil rights, Latino, farm worker, and labor leader; a religious and spiritual figure; a community servant and social entrepreneur; a crusader for nonviolent social change; and an environmentalist and consumer advocate. Liz Chávez Villarino, daughter of César Chávez, will be the honored guest and keynote speaker during the festival on March 27 and will be available for interviews. The Day of Service and Learning is being held in conjunction with the We Serve/New Mexico Centennial commemoration of one hundred years of statehood. |

In order to honor the life and work of Cesar E. Chavez, the co-founder of the National Farm Workers Service Center, during the month of March the Si Se Puede Learning Center will host a service learning project.
One of Chavez' core values is respecting life and the environment, and in that spirit, the students have elected to build a community garden in front of our learning center. The students plan to use the grown produce in a charitable manner, with plans to donate goods to local homeless shelters, sell goods to residents and send the proceeds to Haiti and Chile, or donate goods to local firemen and policemen who fight to protect others. This garden will be constructed by the students during the week of March 15th-19th, with primary work being done on Wednesday March 17th and Friday March 19th. If you are interested in volunteering please contact the Resident Service Coordinator at 210-599-1564.
In order to help prepare for the responsibilities of maintaining their own garden, students will visit the San Antonio Botanical Gardens on Friday March 12th, to learn about plant life and water cycles. In addition, students will participate in an off-site neighborhood clean-up on Wednesday March 24th, where we will visit a local abandoned lot, to pick up trash and recycle any items possible. Students will also participate in a clean-up of their apartment complex, the Aguila Oaks Apartments. These acts of service will not only be beneficial to the community, but will also help students learn the importance of respecting the environment we live in, and reinforcing the power each person has to help make a difference.
These service learning projects will be accompanied by classroom activities both before and after the events, to help students reflect on the impact they have made in their communities, and the lessons they have learned. The Month will culminate in a celebration of the Birthday of Cesar Chavez, as well as an event for families and community members to come together to view the students' completed garden and photos from their service projects. This family event will take place on Saturday, March 27th between Noon-3pm at the Si Se Puede Learning Center. Please join us for this celebration!
If you are interested in volunteering for any of these projects/events, or contributing any materials or food, please contact Abby Burg, the Resident Service Coordinator at nfwscsanantonio@gmail.com. Your support will be greatly appreciated! |
