NC Tobaccoville Meet at Reynolds American processing plant in Tobaccoville, NC Farmworker Awareness Week Brian C. bconnors at floc dot com For over 20 years, a coalition of religious groups from all over North Carolina have marched together during Holy Week in the Pilgrimage for Peace and Justice. Core walkers along with over 30 sponsoring organizations in 5 different cities walk together to support and promote various social justice issues, including farmworker rights. This year the Pilgrimage will focus on promoting justice for farmworkers, fair trade policies, and immigrant rights. On March 31, Pilgrimage participants and FLOC supporters will march together from Tobaccoville, NC, where Reynolds American's tobacco processing plant is located, to Reynolds headquarters in downtown Winston Salem, in support of FLOC's Reynolds Campaign. We are calling on Reynolds American, one of the largest tobacco corporations in the US, to meet with FLOC to discuss the deplorable conditions the exist in tobacco fields in the South. Along the route we will celebrate past victories and leaders and Cesar Chavez's birthday. Please march with us in support of justice for farmworkers! TX San Antonio Si Se Puede Learning Center Farmworker Awareness Week Si Se Puede Learning Center, NFWSC nfwscsanantonio at gmail dot com In order to honor the life and work of Cesar E. Chavez, the co-founder of the National Farm Workers Service Center, during the month of March the Si Se Puede Learning Center will host a service learning project.

One of Chavez' core values is respecting life and the environment, and in that spirit, the students have elected to build a community garden in front of our learning center. The students plan to use the grown produce in a charitable manner, with plans to donate goods to local homeless shelters, sell goods to residents and send the proceeds to Haiti and Chile, or donate goods to local firemen and policemen who fight to protect others. This garden will be constructed by the students during the week of March 15th-19th, with primary work being done on Wednesday March 17th and Friday March 19th. If you are interested in volunteering please contact the Resident Service Coordinator at 210-599-1564.

In order to help prepare for the responsibilities of maintaining their own garden, students will visit the San Antonio Botanical Gardens on Friday March 12th, to learn about plant life and water cycles. In addition, students will participate in an off-site neighborhood clean-up on Wednesday March 24th, where we will visit a local abandoned lot, to pick up trash and recycle any items possible. Students will also participate in a clean-up of their apartment complex, the Aguila Oaks Apartments. These acts of service will not only be beneficial to the community, but will also help students learn the importance of respecting the environment we live in, and reinforcing the power each person has to help make a difference.

These service learning projects will be accompanied by classroom activities both before and after the events, to help students reflect on the impact they have made in their communities, and the lessons they have learned. The Month will culminate in a celebration of the Birthday of Cesar Chavez, as well as an event for families and community members to come together to view the students' completed garden and photos from their service projects. This family event will take place on Saturday, March 27th between Noon-3pm at the Si Se Puede Learning Center. Please join us for this celebration!

If you are interested in volunteering for any of these projects/events, or contributing any materials or food, please contact Abby Burg, the Resident Service Coordinator at nfwscsanantonio@gmail.com. Your support will be greatly appreciated!
