WINTER 2005-2006 SLACTIVIST NEWS

Woo-hoo, the fall semester is over and the holidays have arrived! Before you let your mind go into hibernation, we wanted to put a couple of things on your radar so that you can hit the ground running this spring:

Five ways YOU can SLAP Corporate Greed this winter...

1. SUPPORT NYU GRAD STUDENTS

As many of you know, New York University graduate research and teaching assistants have been on strike since November 9th. They are demanding that the university negotiate a fair contract immediately.

On November 28th, the president of NYU, John Sexton sent a threatening letter to NYU graduate employees, demanding that they end the strike on December 5th, or else they would be suspended from teaching for a year, and would lose their guaranteed stipend for a year. Despite this, union members voted overwhelmingly to stay out on strike.

Visit http://www.unionvoice.org/campaign/nyu to take action on this issue now!

2. REGISTER NOW FOR USAS’S WINTER CONFERENCE (FEB. 9-12, SAN FRANCISCO BAY AREA)

This winter youth and student activists from across the country will converge on the San Francisco Bay to network, strategize, and prepare to tear it up this spring.

REGISTER NOW AT http://www.studentsagainstsweatshops.org/register.php!

Need help fundraising to bring a delegation to this conference? We may be able to help! Call the national office of SLAP at 202-393-1044 ext. 221 or e-mail slap@jwj.org.

3. SAVE THE DATE- IT’S THE SEVENTH ANNUAL NATIONAL STUDENT LABOR WEEK OF ACTION (MARCH 27- APRIL4, 2006)!

In 2005..15+ students began a 19-day sit-in for a living wage for all workers at Washington University in St. Louis... 600 students and allies rallied and blocked traffic in support of bargaining rights for graduate teaching assistants at U. Mass. Amherst...a student at Clark Atlanta University was suspended for organizing a worker’s rights teach-in, on campus....there were over 225 actions and events in support of workers rights to organize...And all of this happened during one week!

For info on how you can get involved e-mail us at slap@jwj.org!

4. ARE YOU GOING TO BE IN WASHINGTON, D.C. THIS SPRING?
