ATTENTION SLACTIVISTS: Fall into this action this semester with the Student Labor Action Project!

Looking for an exciting activity that will get your new SLAP coalition hyped? Need something that’ll get students pumped for this spring’s National Student Labor Week of Action? Fall into action this semester by participating in these exciting events:

I. Take Action Against Wal-Mart!

Participate in Higher Expectations Week: A Week of Action against Wal-Mart! On November 13-19, over 400 organizations from across the country—from small business owners and women’s rights groups to environmentalists and labor unions —are coming together to stand up to Wal-Mart. For more information e-mail carl@jwj.org

Why? Because Wal-Mart:

  • Discriminates against women
  • Disrespects the rights of its’ workers to unionize
  • Doesn’t provide its’ workers adequate healthcare
  • Destroys the environment
  • Censors books, music, and movies
  • Doesn’t sell contraceptives in many of its stores.
  • AND MUCH MORE!
From November 13-19 you can help change Wal-Mart by:

1)  Hosting a screening of the new film by Robert Greenwald, “Wal-Mart: The High Cost of Low Price”. The Student Labor Action Project will be providing students with free copies of the DVD, along with discussion guides, fact sheets, organizing manuals, and other fun materials. To get your Wal-Mart Week of Action packet e-mail carl@jwj.org.

2)  Participate in local actions and activities being organized by Jobs with Justice, ACORN, and United Students Against Sweatshops, unions, and/or other groups. For info on how you can get plugged in e-mail carl@jwj.org.

And if you’re still excited after Higher Expectations Week participate in campaigns against corporate giant Wal-Mart during the entire holiday season. To learn more contact carl@jwj.org.

II. Worker’s Rights are Human Rights! Participate in December 10- International Human Rights Day!

During the week of December 10 Jobs with Justice along with hundreds of labor unions, religious groups, community organizations and students will be organizing actions in support of the right to organize. You can get involved by:

1.  Voice@Work works with professors, unions, community groups and workers to organize teach-ins year round on colleges and universities in support of worker’s rights. Bring a teach-in to your campus. For more information and for a Voice@Work Teach-In Toolkit e-mail carl@aflcio.org.

Our Vision... Our Campaign...

First envisioned by the United States Student Association in 2001, National Take Affirmative Action Day is a day for students to demand that their college and university administrators defend and strengthen the programs that ensure an equal opportunity for all students: affirmative action programs! Since then National Take Affirmative Action Day has grown exponentially with the co-sponsorship of the NAACP Youth & College Division and the Leadership Conference on Civil Rights Education Fund’s Student Activist Network. As long as institutional discrimination is present in institutions of higher education, National Take Affirmative Action Day will serve as a means for student of color activists to stand in solidarity and action for justice!
