The POWER campaign is advancing legislative and policy solutions to ensure that workers who try to exercise their basic civil and labor rights are protected from retaliation and exploitation.
Too often, when workers attempt to organize to combat exploitation, employers use immigration enforcement as a weapon to squash organizing efforts and trump labor law. Immigrant workers who are under the constant threat of deportation are forced to accept diminished working conditions. This, in turn, undermines wages and working conditions for all workers. All workers stand to lose when immigrant workers are exploited, as wages and conditions are dragged down across the board.

Today, over 100 women leaders from around the country are in Washington, D.C. for We Belong Together's women's lobby day. This marks the beginning of a week of action to mobilize thousands of people around the country to call on Congress to push for immigration reform that will be fair for women.

Last week Jobs with Justice leaders pounded the pavement on Capitol Hill trying to make sure immigration reform will work for workers, not just corporations. Now, as Members of Congress are home for Easter recess, Jobs with Justice local coalitions are setting up appointments and hosting a town hall meeting to ask Members of Congress to demand workers’ rights protections be included in any reform.

As workers and unions attempt to organize in the U.S. economy, we are confronted with a broken immigration system as well as corporate driven U.S. labor laws. When these two systems meet at the worksite, it’s no wonder that it has become extremely difficult for workers to organize for their rights.
