ACCOUNTABLE ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT
JwJ coalitions are fighting for people’s power against corporations; fighting to ensure that community members have a say in what kind of development happens in their neighborhood; fighting for accountable economic development; fighting for not just jobs, but Jobs with Justice.
Throughout the US, communities are organizing to achieve accountable economic development that makes public authorities more accountable to our communities when they grant significant subsidies, land use deals, and tax breaks to private companies. The goal of the campaigns is to ensure community involvement in neighborhood development decisions and guaranteeing basic employment and community benefits standards. Communities are coming together with labor unions to focus on development projects – from big box stores to public housing, and demand that they:
- provide living wages in all phases of construction and operation
- provide employment opportunities for community residents, particularly for projects in a low-income communities
- contribute to the creation of thriving communities
