Strikers March from Methuen to Boston to Win Justice at Shaw's

Cross-posted from Labor Notes.

March for Justice at Shaw'sStriking workers at the Supervalu- owned Shaw's Distribution Center in Methuen, Mass., have been marching from Methuen to Boston for justice since Sunday, May 23.

The 310 workers, members of UFCW Local 791, have been on strike since March 7 over the company's insistence that the burden of increasing health care costs be borne by workers.

As a resident of Somerville, I chose to meet up with the strikers on their march from Medford to Somerville, the third day of their four-day journey. While we marched, the 50 or so workers and supporters enjoyed broad support from passing motorists, as well as cheers from many residents in the neighborhoods along the route.

It was easy to see how bringing the strike into the community gets people mobilized in different ways than just walking a picket line. All kinds of people get involved. I especially liked the opportunity to meet up with other labor activists from Somerville.

May 29 Mass Mobilization Against Arizona SB1070

Tens of thousands are mobilizing to Phoenix on May 29 to show the world that people from all backgrounds across the country are unified in denouncing SB1070.  From Seattle to Miami, the demands are clear, that President Obama needs to end the criminalization of people of color in the state of Arizona and stop SB1070.

Pablo Alvarado, Executive Director of the National Day Laborer Organizing Network, stated, “The eyes of the world are watching and President Obama must act.  SB1070 is where we draw the line and say enough is enough.  Enough of a disastrous and dangerous ‘enforcement first’ strategy to immigration reform.  Enough to the criminalization of workers and families.  We will escalate our struggle if the President does not act concretely and immediately to stop the implementation of SB1070.”

A Climate of Fear

Opinion

President Obama announced a decision to send 1,200 National Guard troops to the US-Mexico border.  Mr. Obama is trying to appeal to enforcement-first and enforcement-only activists in and out of Congress with this escalation, but Republicans continue to distance themselves from any measures that include a path to citizenship for those in the US without documents.

You did it! Senate Passes Financial Reform Bill

Last night the Senate passed their version of the financial reform bill, bringing the U.S. to the brink of passing the biggest overhaul of financial regulations since the Great Depression.  The New York Times says:

The bill seeks to curb abusive lending, particularly in the mortgage industry, and to ensure that troubled companies, no matter how big or complex, can be liquidated at no cost to taxpayers. And it would create a “financial stability oversight council” to coordinate efforts to identify risks to the financial system. It would also establish new rules on the trading of derivatives and require hedge funds and most other private equity companies to register for regulation with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

Although this bill is far from perfect, it is a big move in the right direction, and it would not have happened without people like you taking action.  Wall Street has fought this bill every step of the way, spending $1.4 million a day on lobbying.  It was your voices: in the streets, on the phone, and in the mailboxes of your Senators that made it impossible for the banks to kill this legislation.

Support a STRONG Financial Reform Bill

We are closer than ever to winning meaningful reform of Wall Street.  The work of Jobs with Justice members, activists, and allies is starting to add up to a national movement that is changing the debate in Washington, and our momentum is building

The Senate is close to finalizing a banking reform bill, and the big banks are trying desperately to weaken or kill banking reforms that might prevent another meltdown, even threatening to filibuster.

Today, Jobs with Justice and allies will join National People's Action,  SEIU, and the AFL-CIO for a "Showdown on K Street" in Washington, DC, ground zero for Wall Street's corporate lobbyists, as the Senate is voting on important amendments to the banking reform bill.

Amendment Adopted to Open the Fed's Books

Maybe we'll finally see who got the trillions

Under pressure from Jobs with Justice coalitions and their partners like NPA and PICO, the US Senate adopted the Sanders amendment to the banking reform bill (S3217), 96-0, that would bring about an audit of the Federal Reserve.

This is a major step towards accountability, as Fed Head Ben Bernanke has repeatedly refused to tell even members of Congress which financial institutions received trillions of dollars in low or no cost loans from several "special" programs.  Despite being broadly popular with voters (like breaking up the big banks and an independent Consumer Financial Protection Agency), Wall Street's grip on Congress made the audit an uphill battle.  But Sanders agreed to compromise language that limited the audit to a one-time examination of the "special" loan programs.  Similar language is already in the House version of banking reform.

The Senate is continuing to take up other amendments, to strengthen and weaken the reform bill.  Even the New York Times editorialized, "They Have to Do Better" on financial reform.

Showdown on K Street Monday, May 17th

Break Wall Street lobbyists' grip on Congress.  We demand jobs and a real economic recovery!

  • Sign up to join us on K Street in DC on Monday, May 17th at noon
  • Can't make it to DC?  Join our virtual march & we'll keep you posted on how to support the rally from your town

Wall Street recklessness and corporate greed have destroyed our economy and hijacked our democracy.  Corporate lobbyists representing the big banks paved the way to deregulate Wall Street, and now they're standing in the way of reforms that would protect people and strengthen our economy.

Keep the Pressure on to Rein in Wall Street, Demand Good Jobs

We are building a movement.

Since January, Jobs with Justice has been working with labor and community partners to send a message to Congress:  Rein in Wall Street.  We need good jobs, now.

The work of Jobs with Justice members, activists, and allies is starting to add up to a national movement that is changing the debate in Washington, and our momentum is building.  Just last week, the Senate overcame a threatened Republican filibuster and brought us closer to meaningful reform of Wall Street.  Senator Durbin, the #2 Democrat, spoke out in favor of an amendment to cut down the size of "too-big-to-fail" banks.  We also learned that the Justice Department has launched a criminal investigation of Goldman Sachs.

Vermont Single-Payer Health Care RallyMONTPELIER - Vermonters from all across the state converged on the statehouse on May 1st in a demonstration to show that Vermont can and should be the first state in the nation to recognize healthcare as a human right and provide it as a public good by implementing a single-payer, universal healthcare system.

Over a thousand people marched from the Montpelier City Hall down to the capital building accompanied by drums, dancers, puppets, baloons and signs supporting universal healthcare whiloe chanting "hey, hey what do we say?
