EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR POSITION
RI JOBS WITH JUSTICE
Rhode Island Jobs with Justice, a multi-issue permanent coalition of over 40 Rhode Island based unions, community organizations and faith based groups, is seeking a qualified candidate for executive director.
RI Jobs with Justice is a worker’s rights, racial and economic justice coalition built on a vision that everyone in Rhode Island and across the world has the right to live and work in healthy, safe and economically sustainable communities where their human rights are respected.
RI Jobs with Justice operates on a direct action model of solidarity and reciprocity, running strategic campaigns in the common interest of our broad based membership and providing strategic support for member organization led campaigns through the organizing tools in the Jobs with Justice network. Campaigns include: right to organize and collective bargaining campaigns, unorganized worker’s rights campaigns, workplace justice, immigrant rights, global justice and people centered economic development that promotes equitable state and city budgets and fights gentrification. State and local policy work is a component of the work of RI Jobs with Justice.
The Executive Director is responsible for:
· Raising the organization’s annual budget through a combination of member dues, grassroots fundraising and foundation grants.
· Working with leaders on the Organizing Committee to develop campaigns and strategic support for member campaigns.
· Implementing campaign strategies and overseeing the implementation with volunteers and leaders.
· Building consensus on common goals among the diverse member and allied organizations and other stakeholders.
· Recruiting new organizational members and individuals and working with leaders to recruit new organizations and individuals.
· Developing new leaders to participate in the Organizing Committee and in other campaign committees in an ongoing way.
· Public messaging and communications for the organization, including press releases and email and/or print updates for members.
· Representing the organization at a variety of labor and community permanent and campaign based coalition tables.
· Managing the administration of the organization.
The Executive Director works under the direction of the Organizing Committee and develops involvement of the broader member Steering Committee. RI Jobs with Justice is a chartered local coalition of the National Jobs with Justice network: www.jwj.org, as such the Executive Director is also a liaison to the National Office.
Qualified Candidates will:
· Be committed to economic and racial justice, have a working knowledge of economic and social justice issues and be committed to working within the purview of the RI JwJ Principles of Unity. (attached)
· Have a minimum of three years experience in community or labor organizing, including direct knowledge of right to organize campaigns and collective bargaining fights, and/or community justice campaigns.
· Have excellent oral and written communication skills.
· Have a demonstrated ability to build consensus across diverse constituencies.
· Be able to work independently and have excellent time management skills.
· Be committed to leadership development.
· Have experience managing volunteers, hosting events and participating in direct actions.
· Have experience with foundation and/or grassroots fundraising.
· Pay excellent attention to detail.
· Be willing and able to work nights and/or weekends as necessary.
· Be proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and comfortable using e-mail.
Additional skills candidates may have are:
· Proficiency in written and/or oral Spanish.
· Proficiency in using Microsoft Access.
· Proficiency in managing simple word press websites.
· Experience in non-profit management and administration.
· Have experience working within the religious community or with interfaith organizations.

Chicago Jobs with Justice Executive Director
The Organization
Chicago Jobs with Justice is a progressive coalition of labor, community, religious and student organizations that work together to build a strong, diverse, progressive labor movement dedicated to fighting for the rights of working people and building the movement for social and economic justice. JwJ mobilizes direct actions to secure the right to organize, living wage jobs, health care, workplace justice and civil rights for all.
Chicago JwJ is part of a nation-wide network of over 45 coalitions, and the Executive Director coordinates with National JwJ staff and committees. See www.jwj.org for more information. Steering and Executive Committees, composed of representatives of organizations in the coalition, oversee the direction of Chicago JwJ, approve an annual budget, and hire staff.
The Position
This is an organizing position, with multiple responsibilities. The Executive Director must be a self-starter and have strong organizing skills. Her or his ability to work with volunteers, develop leaders and recruit members to secure their ongoing, systematic work within the coalition will maximize success. Among core responsibilities, the Executive Director:
Organizing Actions and Events: works with JwJ members, committees, partner organizations, and organizing committees to develop and strengthen mobilization systems, plan and carry out direct actions and events in support of the coalition's mission and ongoing campaigns.
Recruitment: conducts and coordinates outreach to member organizations and to new groups, and is primarily responsible for maintaining relationships with the leadership of JwJ member organizations and increasing rank and file involvement in JwJ.
Fundraising: Conducts and oversees fundraising for JwJ’s annual budget and coordinates the development of the annual budget and fundraising plan. JwJ’s annual budget is raised largely through donations from individuals, local unions, churches, and community organizations. Other fundraising tasks include grant writing and event-planning.
Administration: is responsible for financial and information administration tasks (in conjunction with a volunteer accountant), including required reporting to National JwJ.
Communications: produces leaflets, brochures and other materials, recruits and develops media spokespersons and generally manages press relations.
Staffing Committees: builds and provides leadership for the Workers' Rights Board and other JwJ Committees, as established by the Executive and Steering Committees.
Qualifications
- Solid commitment to the principles of social and economic justice;
- Excellent communication skills, both oral and written;
- Ability to be a self-starter, and to work independently toward agreed upon goals;
- A strong ability to motivate people, coordinate volunteer activity and delegate responsibility. Supervisory / Leadership experience a plus;
- Demonstrated ability to raise funds.
- Ability to develop and maintain relationships with a wide range of organizations and people;
- An understanding of the labor movement, religious organizations and other social justice movements;
- Prefer five years grassroots organizing experience - union experience is a plus;
- Willingness to work long flexible hours, including evenings and weekends (Comp Time provided);
- Proficient in computer skills, including database management, word processing and desktop publishing;
- Own vehicle available for work (mileage is reimbursed).
Also desired: Ability to speak languages other than English. . Knowledge of, and/or participation in, Jobs with Justice in Chicago or other areas. Background:
THE COALITION FOR ECONOMIC JUSTICE (CEJ) is an ongoing coalition of labor, faith, community, academic and student activists and organizations. We engage in collective action to promote strong, sustainable communities and economic justice for all. Together, we build-- and win-- dynamic campaigns for living wages, rights at work, accountable economic development and health care for all through education, public advocacy and mobilization of our members, communities and allies.
As a coalition-based organization, our primary approach to building power is through creating and maintaining long-term alliances between membership-based worker and community organizations. We also organize resource allies such as policy advocates and think tanks as well as academic, moral, government and other opinion leaders to support and augment the work of our state and city alliances. CEJ utilizes multiple strategies to advance its campaigns, including direct action, media communications and education, grassroots lobbying, advocacy, and non-partisan electoral activity.
CEJ is a 501c3 non-profit organization funded through memberships, fundraising events and private foundations. We are an affiliate of the national organization, Jobs with Justice. We are working closely with Jobs with Justice in NYC to co-anchor a statewide alliance for Good Jobs and Strong Communities.
Job Duties:
- Develop campaign plans in coordination with CEJ’s Executive Director and our partners and implement campaign strategies.
- Develop communications materials, utilizing traditional and new media, for use with media, elected officials, and members.
- Build CEJ’s base of members and leaders through outreach, one on one meetings and education.
- Share in fundraising and administrative duties.
Desired Knowledge & Skills:
- Dedication to social, economic, and racial justice.
- Experience with coalition building, community organizing, and policy campaigns. Preference given to candidates with 3 years relevant work experience.
- Experience with grassroots and private foundation fundraising.
- Familiarity with local politics, labor institutions and community organizations.
- Ability to work with diverse populations and constituencies, handle multiple projects and duties simultaneously in a small office environment, work under pressure, and handle tight deadlines.
- Good written and oral communications skills including public speaking, meeting facilitation, media relations, leadership/member development and grassroots lobbying.
- Bachelor’s degree (preferred fields: political science, history, labor studies, social work).
- Driver’s License and access to own transportation.
- Advanced working knowledge of Microsoft Office programs required.
- Dual language preferred.
POSITION AVAILABLE: May/June, 2009
Salary Range: $28,000 - $31,000 with health and retirement benefits

Description: We have summer, fall, winter, and spring positions available! Semester or summer-long opportunities include: Field Intern, Program Intern, & Student Labor Action Project Intern. All interns can expect to spend a portion of their time on general administrative support. Other job duties may include assisting national staff in providing support services to local coalitions & helping to prepare for national trainings. Interns are responsible for finding their own housing. Limited stipends are available.
Qualifications: Interns should have an interest in the labor movement and/or issues affecting working people. Ability to take direction as well as self-direct. Enthusiasm for working with diverse personalities and within deadlines. Desktop publishing and database experience a plus.
