JOB OPPORTUNITIES

Membership Director, South Florida Jobs with Justice (Miami, FL)

Salary: $40 – 45,000 based on qualifications
Benefits: full health coverage, 3 weeks vacation, 10 holidays, 4 personal days, 13 sick days, up to 5 days bereavement leave

The Organization:

South Florida Jobs with Justice is a labor/community coalition fighting for economic justice and the rights of working people. We were created ten years ago as the Labor Committee of the NAACP. As such, we build relationships among organizations that represent working people and we engage our growing base of individual activists who have pledged to “be there for someone else’s fight as well as their own.” This is a special challenge given the diversity of our membership: A significant number of our individual members are working class persons of color, immigrants from South America, Cuba, the Caribbean (especially Haiti), trade unionists and first generation community college students.

SFJWJ has a Steering Committee that oversees the direction of the coalition, approves an annual budget and elects officers. Within this body is the Executive Board, the entity that oversees day to day business of the coalition between membership meetings. Our annual budget is raised largely through donations by individuals, unions, community organizations and private foundations who share a commitment to social justice.

Our campaigns expand: 1) community-based workers’ rights, 2) cross-border worker organizing; 3) community control of [re]development; and 4) inter-ethnic collaboration, specifically between Black and Latin@ communities. SFJwJ is known for work on mobile home preservation, public subsidy accountability, women’s leadership development and workers in the Miami-based flower industry. For more information visit our website at www.sfjwj.org.

The Position:

Activities will focus on supporting local labor and community struggles through strategic community organizing and local policy campaigns. The Membership Director has primary responsibility to:

  1. Recruit new organizational and individual members throughout the year
  2. Maintain relationships with current members and collect renewal dues
  3. Create and implement targeted outreach plans--based on current and future campaigns
  4. Identify, recruit and develop new leaders within the coalition
  5. Lead volunteer recruitment, training and management activities
  6. Facilitate committees

The above duties include database management and other administrative or campaign related work as decided upon by the Executive Director. This is an Assistant Director position with expectation for advancement to the Executive Director position within 6-8 months.

The Executive Board has drafted a program and staffing plan for 2010 which reflects the transition of the current Executive Director into the lead staff for an industry campaign in Miami. The plan also incorporates a leadership plan to intensify community relationships and utilize our strong political leadership with Latino elected officials.

Qualifications:

  • Solid commitment to the principles of social and economic justice. Dedication to a progressive labor movement and experience with trade unions required.
  • Appreciation for the global social justice movement and the diverse international communities of Miami.
  • A strong ability to motivate people, coordinate volunteer activity and delegate responsibility.
  • Demonstrated ability to raise funds , both grassroots and foundation-based. Budget and fiscal experience necessary.
