DC Jobs with Justice is seeking an Executive Director

Background: DC Jobs with Justice is a coalition of labor organizations, community groups, religious organizations and student groups dedicated to protecting the rights of working people and supporting community struggles to win greater economic justice in Washington, DC. The Executive Director will lead DC JwJ to win justice in workplaces and communities through:

  • Organizational Development and Leadership
    1. Assist in development and implementation of organizational strategy in conjunction with staff and Board.
    2. Deepening and maintaining relationships with stakeholders, including Board members, coalition leaders, allies, and staff.
    3. Primary spokesperson for the organization. Represent the organization to the media, coalition members, allied organizations, and the general public.
    4. Defend organizational interests.
    5. Crisis Management.
    6. Assist as needed with trainings.
  • Staff Management
    1. Supervise staff.
    2. Provide ongoing strategic assistance and other support to staff
    3. Develop staff meeting agendas, including staff retreat
    4. Recruit and hire staff
  • Fundraising and Financial Management
    1. Develop and oversee fundraising plan.
    2. Write grants and cultivate relationships with major donors and foundation staff.
    3. Develop yearly budget in conjunction with staff and board
    4. Work with staff to manage budget, track cash flow, payables, receivables and payroll.
    5. Prepare year-end financials, including audit and 990.
  • Programmatic Support
    1. Provide overall program guidance and strategic support to campaigns, including developing strategy and doing on-going evaluation.
    2. Liaison with key allied organizations
    3. Working with staff and leaders look for areas of program development
    4. With Board, provide direction, oversight, and evaluation for coalition projects (Workers’ Rights Board, Interfaith Worker Justice, Student Labor Action Project, etc)

Key qualities and competencies:

* Strong commitment to and understanding of worker justice and the labor movement;
* Knowledge, skill, and experience in leading effective campaign strategy;
* Ability to mobilize grassroots support;
* Ability to build diverse partnerships;
* Ability to manage a variety of demands and campaigns;
* Experience leading a staff team in mobilizing coalition partners in campaigns;
* Strong verbal and written communication;
* Ability to develop and maintain funder relationships;
* Ability to provide oversight for finances and record-keeping;
* Bilingual Spanish helpful.

Term of employment: This is a full-time position. We are seeking someone to start as soon as November 1st and no later than December 1st.

Compensation:   $45,000 - $50,000 a year, depending on experience; fully paid health and dental benefit, generous leave policy.

Organization: Jobs with Justice is a national coalition of labor unions and religious, civil rights, women's, student, farm, and community organizations working together at the local level to defend and expand the rights of working people. Imaginative direct action tactics are the cornerstone of Jobs with Justice activities. Recently, Jobs with Justice has mobilized thousands of working people and students to address a host of issues including corporate greed, the right to unionize, globalization, living wage legislation, and the right to family-supporting full-time jobs. Description: We have summer, fall, winter, and spring positions available! Semester or summer-long opportunities include: Development, Field, Program, Communications & Technology and Student Labor Action Project Intern. All interns can expect to spend a portion of their time on general administrative support. Other job duties may include assisting national staff in providing support services to local coalitions & helping to prepare for national trainings. Interns are responsible for finding their own housing. Limited stipends are available.

Qualifications: Interns should have an interest in the labor movement and/or issues affecting working people. Ability to take direction as well as self-direct. Enthusiasm for working with diverse personalities and within deadlines. Desktop publishing and database experience a plus.
